Hello

For Los Angeles based Japanese Calligraphy artist, Yosai, calligraphy is her lifelong practice to train and sharpen her perception as traditional Japanese art of calligraphy goes beyond simply writing characters correctly but considered a form of meditation requiring deep concentration and a calm mind to face the paper.

She extended her calligraphy work to paintings like Sumi-e to express the beauty of the scenes based on Japanese Wabi-sabi.  Unconstrained by traditional techniques and rules, she pursues dynamism, strength and power with unique flow that combines freedom, boldness, delicacy or their harmonies.

Capturing the energy of the universe and the harmonious beauty of nature’s laws, her work explores the unexpected within the orderly.  She creates to share the inspiration of the now - turning the emotions of this very moment into an enduring artistic dialogue.

My Story

Born in Miyagi, Japan, Yosai began her journey into the world of calligraphy at the age of six. Her dedication to the craft led her to be awarded the title of Shihan (Master), followed by the prestigious rank of Kyojyu (Professor) from Nihon Shuji (The Japan Calligraphy Foundation).

Her professional name, Yosai (陽彩), was granted to her by the Foundation. It translates to the "vibrant colors brought forth by sunlight" or "radiant hues." This name carries a profound nuance: it represents a presence that does not merely illuminate its surroundings with brightness, but one that beautifully colors everything it touches.

In her work, Yosai strives to express the harmony and energy that resonate with the providence of nature and universal laws. She seeks to capture the hidden elements of surprise and the spontaneous beauty found within the natural world. Driven by a desire to share the profound emotions of "this very moment," she approaches her art as a daily practice of presence.

Guided by her mission to share a mindful way of living through Japanese calligraphy, Yosai offers classes for both children and adults. Her creative reach spans from traditional instruction to dynamic live performances and immersive workshops.
